Dealing with performance of applications, or programs as those things have been called decades ago, since his start in IT in the early 90s, Rainer went trough all the stages of APM (Application Performance Monitoring) and now O11y (Observability) to find the best way of doing things.
He is always learning but having helped bring to market Wily Technology (now Broadcom), Dynatrace, AppDynamics (now Cisco) and latest Instana (now IBM) brought him tons of experience and knowledge about the ins and outs of O11y. Wether it is parsing logs files (with PERL in the early days), early Java instrumentation with Wily or automated distributed tracing in almost realtime with Instana, he has seen it all. And that enables him to determine what a good solution for a given problem can be.
Nicknamed “The Ducktor” because he listens well, like the proverbial rubberduck in software development, doesn’t judge but may have some advice that leads you to the solution. Test it out during one of the Wednesday Woes sessions in the community – it is free to join.
There is not one best way to do things but many different roads to success which depends very much on the systems to be observed and the organisation that is running it.
